Kids Dentistry

What is Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride (as you probably already know) is a substance that, when incorporated into the surface of your teeth, makes them more resistant to decay.

Research has shown that fluoride works most effectively to prevent decay of your teeth topically (from the outside in), not from the inside out through your bloodstream during tooth formation as was previously thought. This is why fluoride is just as effective for fully formed adult teeth as it is in children whose teeth are developing. Because of this, the more often and deeply that fluorides are applied to your teeth topically, the more resistant to decay they will be. There are no health risks associated with topical fluoride application as recommended.

Drinking fluoridated water or taking fluoride supplements are the most effective household means of delivering fluoride to the surfaces of your teeth because it is released in your saliva, which continually bathes your teeth with the fluoride. This constant, albeit modestly invasive, exposure creates an external layer of fortified enamel that renders these methods so useful. Other prescription and non-prescription means of fluoride delivery (toothpastes, rinses etc.) though helpful, are less so because they only supply fluoride to your teeth during use and for a short time after. The one exception to this is a fluoride treatment performed here in our office.

The fluoride treatments that we provide for you here in our dental clinic(in the form of either gels or varnishes) are uniquely effective because they permit significantly greater incorporation of the fluoride into the surfaces of your teeth creating a broader layer of decay resistant tooth structure. The reason for this is that the fluoride gels that we use in these treatments contain a weak acid that allows for a more extensive infiltration of the fluoride into your teeth. The fluoride varnishes we also use adhere to the surfaces of your teeth more tenaciously than any other such product on the market. No other fluoride preparations achieve so great a degree of saturation, which is why no other types are as effective.

Get an Early Start on a Great Smile

Guide your children towards a lifetime of good dental health. At Smiles Inc, we take the time to mentor young patients on the importance of healthy at-home dental hygiene. Our friendly staff speaks "kid talk" fluently, and they love to share fun tips on brushing, rinsing, and flossing.

First Appointment

We recommend that you schedule a first dental appointment around the age of three or four, so we can evaluate your child's overall dental health.

Preventive Measures

In addition to the regular exams, cleaning and polishing that we all require, young teeth need additional protection. Ask the doctor if your child would benefit from these preventive procedures:
• Sealants invisibly coat the surface of the teeth, filling in tiny crevices and cracks that could otherwise become a home to cavities. They also help protect against damage from plaque and acids.
• Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that strengths the enamel when applied to teeth. It is painlessly and comfortably applied with special care in a short time.

We look forward to helping your child begin a lifetime of excellent dental health.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom Teeth

Why is wisdom teeth removal necessary? Some of us are unaffected by them, others develop painful conditions that require their immediate removal. It is not always a wise decision to keep your wisdom teeth. Find out why they may need to be removed, and where to find them in your mouth.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

The third molars, known simply as wisdom teeth, erupt between the ages of 17 and 21 years old. The average person's mouth will comfortably hold 28 of the 32 teeth we are predisposed to have. Since the wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt, there is often little room left to accommodate their size and during your check-up, your dentist may take an orthopantomogram (OPG) x-ray to diagnose the need for their removal. This x-ray gives the dentist a clear view of the area around the wisdom teeth, to determine the type of extraction necessary for each tooth.
If you require surgery to remove your wisdom teeth, it is helpful to prepare yourself and your home before your appointment for a speedy recovery.

Full Mouth Rehabilitation

Full mouth Rehabilitation (reconstruction) is the use of many methods of dentistry to make the correct relationship between gums, bones, muscles and teeth. The mouth is a complex machine; without a proper bite, chewing can become impaired, teeth can become worn and attired, the jaw and neck can become sore and even migraines can occur. Dental bonding porcelain veneers and crowns, dental implants and teeth whitening are all a combination of procedures used in restoring and reconstruction of your mouth. The result is a perfect younger smile.

Gum Treatment

Gum disease (Gingivitis) often develop slowly without causing any pain and can begin at just about any age, Sometimes you may not have any symptoms until the disease has advanced and spread to the supporting bone (Periodontitis) ,causing loss of bone and eventually loss of tooth.
The term gum disease or periodontal disease describes bacterial growth and production of factors that gradually destroys the tissue surrounding and supporting the teeth.

Several warning signs that can signal a gum problem :

 Bleeding gums
 Bad breath
 Red swollen and tender gums
 Pus discharge
 Loose or separating teeth
Gums that have pulled away from the teeth exposing the root

Therefore, it is very important to have a regular dental check up and periodontal examination done, preferably, once in 3months. A Periodontist is a specialist who specializes in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. Using the latest techniques and minor periodontal surgical procedures, a Periodontist can solve your gum problems comprehensively.

Recent studies have shown a link between gum disease and more serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and preterm low birth weight babies. Just getting your teeth cleaned cannot solve this problem. You need a specialist to correctly diagnose and treat these problems.

Various procedures used to treat the gums include:

Non surgical Treatment (Scaling, Root planing, Local drug delivery)
Periodontal Surgery (pocket reduction procedure and regenerative procedure, soft tissue grafts.)
LASER: our Periodontist uses a Laser to treat many gum problems thus avoiding a surgery. Laser assisted treatment ensures more comfort, no bleeding and very fast healing for our patients. Sometimes within two days your gums will look completely normal after laser surgery!
Cosmetic Gum Surgery (correction of gummy smile, making dark gums into pink, root coverage procedures to cover the exposed roots/long teeth) helps to create a beautiful smile.

So get your gums examined by a Periodontist before Gum Disease gets you. Remember healthy gums can make your teeth last a lifetime!

1. Types of Gum Surgery Procedures ?
There are two primary procedures for gum surgery, depending on your current smile.

2. "Gummy Smile" (Excessive Gingival Display)
A "Gummy Smile" can occur due to wear of teeth from teeth grinding, a short upper lip, or having a longer than usual upper jawbone. This smile is when your teeth appear too small and your gums appear too large.

3. "Long Tooth Smile" (Gum Recession)
As your gums recede, your teeth appear longer than normal. While "long teeth" may result in an unattractive smile, you should also be concerned with root sensitivity and possible tooth loss. Recent advances in techniques and materials have resulted in significant improvements in comfort, predictability and esthetics.

4. To correct a "Gummy Smile"
Cosmetic gum surgery can be done to reduce the excess gum and bone. The removal of these tissues allows for normal sized teeth and for a normal gum line appearance by using an instrument, usually a laser, to remove the undesirable tissue. Typically your cosmetic dentist will prescribe an antibacterial mouth rinse to be used twice a day for a two-week period following your surgery.

5. To correct a "Long Tooth Smile"
As your gums recede, your teeth look much "longer" than normal. Such gum recession exposes your sensitive root surface which often makes hot or cold foods and drinks a painful experience. Teeth can become loose as your gum recedes. The cosmetic gum surgery solution is basically when a cosmetic dentist or Periodontist removes tissue from the roof of your mouth and then grafts it onto your gum line. This tissue then reinforces thin gums or fills in areas where your gums have receded. Typically your cosmetic dentist will prescribe an antibacterial mouth rinse to be used twice a day for a two-week period following your surgery.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Gum Surgery

Pros and Cons of Cosmetic Gum Surgery

Advantages
Healing is usually quick and your more youthful and beautiful smile is obvious early on. It has been reported that cosmetic gum surgery additionally improves the health of your gums. The procedure to correct receding gums may even reduce your tooth sensitivity to cold or hot foods or beverages while protecting your roots from decay and lessening further gum shrinkage.

Disadvantages
Cosmetic gum surgery is of course, surgery. Surgery is often performed in segments under a local anesthetic - unless you're entire mouth is undergoing this procedure at once, then a general anesthesia is typically used.

Root Canal Treatment

Endodontics
Once upon a time, if the nerve in your tooth was diseased, you'd probably lose that tooth. Today with a special dental procedure called a root canal therapy we save that tooth. Inside each tooth there is a pulp which provides nutrients and nerves to the tooth; it runs like a thread down through the root. When the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissue dies. If you don't remove it, your tooth gets infected and you could lose it.
Endodontic Therapy or Root Canal Treatment entails the removal of this diseased pulp, cleaning and shaping the canals and filling the resultant canal space with a biocompatible material (gutta percha) to keep the bacteria from reforming in the canal.
At SMILES INC, root canal treatment is usually done in a single sitting for most cases with cutting edge technology. We value your time and multiple sitting root canals are avoided as far as possible.
J MORITA Apex Locators enable us to accurately determine the apical location of the canals with confidence and convenience.
Protaper Universal Rotary and Hand Instruments are used for shaping and cleaning canals. We use Nickel Titanium Rotary Protaper and Hero Shapers files. These are the finest in the world market today.
.Kodak RVG a digital x ray software gives us instant radiographic images of teeth at much greatly reduced X-Ray Radiation exposure. This way we protect our patients from unnecessary radiation.

A root canal is recommended if you have :

♦          Severe toothache while chewing or biting
♦          Prolonged sensitivity or pain to hot or cold drinks
♦          Severe discoloration of the tooth
♦          Swelling and tenderness of gums
♦          A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums
♦          Severe pain especially during night time.

Typical Procedures of Root Canal

STEP I

1. Take an X-ray and consult with a dentist.
2. Receive local anesthesia
3. Drill a hole to access into root canals and chamber of the decayed tooth.
4. Remove infected pulp including nerve tissues and blood vessels.
5. Place temporary filler into the hollowed root canals and chamber.

STEP II

1. Replace temporary filler with a permanent one in root canals and chamber.
2. Seal up the hole drilled in the tooth.
3. Prepare to fit a crown over the treated tooth if needed.

Replacing Missing Teeth

Missing teeth can be replaced in a variety of ways.
You may be a candidate for any one or all of them, depending on the circumstances. Implants are becoming the treatment of choice for a number of reasons. Most significant among these is the expected longevity, strength and stability offered by current implant treatment, as well as the predictability of implant treatment with current technologies. Listed below are common treatment options for missing teeth.

There are three basic ways to fix a missing tooth or teeth:

 A fixed bridge.
 A removable appliance.
 A dental implant

Here are the pros and cons of each treatment:

 A fixed dental bridge
Having a bridge is like having three crowns. The teeth on either side of the missing tooth are prepared for crowns; an impression is made, and is sent to a dental laboratory. The laboratory then makes the crowns and fastens a false tooth between the two crowns - this is a bridge.

The advantages of a bridge are that it is fixed, stable, and feels like your own teeth. In most cases it can be made to look just like you never had a tooth missing. The disadvantage is that you have to treat two teeth besides the one that was extracted - these teeth may otherwise be perfectly sound with nothing wrong.

Crowns:

Is it right for me?
Crowns (or Caps) are dental restorations that are placed over a tooth when conservative restorations are insufficient to restore & function. They are indicated for fractured form teeth, Root canal treated teeth, teeth with large broken down fillings thereby protecting and preserving the underlying natural tooth.
They are either metal in overlaid ceramic or the newest and state of the art "All Ceramic Crowns that not only are more esthetic and tissue friendly but also as strong as ceramic metal crowns. The core of these crowns are fabricated by a computer called CAD -CAM technology and arrive at our office in 3 days after your appointment and can be fit in your mouth 3 days later, giving you an enhanced more lifelike result and impeccable beauty and esthetics mimicking that of natural teeth.

A Dental Implant
♦          A dental implant is an artificial "root" that is implanted in your jaw after a tooth extraction, and then a tooth is placed on it. Biologically, it is like placing an entirely new artificial tooth in your mouth.
♦          The advantages of an implant are: No teeth on either side have to be prepared for crowns, so there is no grinding on "good teeth" - you just fix the missing tooth. Implants can also span the space of multiple missing teeth. There is no limit to the span they can cover, as long as the patient's health is good and there is healthy and adequate bone to support the implant. An implant also is fixed and feels just like your own teeth.

♦          The disadvantages of implants are that they can cost more and be more and time-consuming. There is also a delay in getting the false tooth or teeth - a healing interval of several months may be required before the artificial root can have a tooth placed on it.
♦          A model of an implant tooth between two natural teeth.

Installing Implants with Fixed Bridge
1. Before the procedure

2. Implant Placement: First, the implants are installed. With conventional procedure, implants are left about 2-6 months to integrate with the jawbone before the next step is taken. If immediate loaded implants can be done, a temporary bridge may be placed at the same time.

3.Attaching the bridge to the implants

4. End result: The new bridge will handle all the pressure that your strong, natural back teeth did. You will have a stable and secure solution that allows you to eat what you want.

Implants supported Over dentures
• Denture stabilized with implants. So renewed confidence and improved quality of life as well
• Possible to use existing dentures
• Removable
• Simple and relatively Inexpensive

Installing Full Arch Implants with Over dentures

1. Before the procedure

The dentist determines what needs to be done and prepares both himself and the patient for the coming treatment procedure.

2. Implant Placement

The first step is installing dental implants to replace the lost tooth roots. In this case, two implants are used. Four implants may be placed in cases for added over denture retention. Temporary dentures may be worn that enable you to eat and function like normal while waiting for the permanent over denture to be installed.

3. Attaching the bridge to the implants

A ball or bar is then attached on top of the implants and the over dentures installed over. The ball or bar acts as a clip that enables the over dentures to snap securely in place.

4. End result

0The removable over dentures are securely clipped on top of the implant with the ball/bar giving the strength and stability that allows you to better than with conventional dentures

Dentures

Removable partial or full dentures can replace a single missing tooth, several teeth, or all of the teeth in your upper and/or lower jaw. Dentures rely on support by the other teeth in that jaw (for partial dentures) and from mechanical support by the remaining ridge of gum and underlying bone. Maxillary (upper jaw) full dentures also may be helped by suction between the denture and the underlying gum of your palate (roof of mouth).

Orthodontics

Dental braces are used to correct problems with teeth such as crowding, too much space between the teeth, protruding teeth or bite problems. Once thought of as a treatment mainly for children, braces are now becoming common with people of all ages who wish to make the most of their teeth. Different types of braces will be used depending on the correction needed to the teeth. There are also different types of braces that will be less visible when they are worn.

Types of braces

Metal Braces
Metal braces are made of stainless steel and are one of the oldest types of braces. This type of brace is relatively inexpensive compared to some of the more advanced braces. This type of brace does have aesthetic problems as they are visible when worn and have been known to stain teeth.

Ceramic or Crystal Braces
A very popular alternative to metal braces due to their lack of visibility when worn. Made of composite materials, they look very natural when fitted and will not stain teeth. Ceramic or clear(crystal) braces are also very strong but may need to be taken more care of.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are also invisible when worn as they are fitted behind the teeth on the tongue side. Commonly used to correct bites and straighten teeth, lingual braces may take a little more time to get used to. The plus side is that they are really invisible, the minus is that people getting used to them may have speech problems at first.

ADVANCED BRACES (Self-Ligating Braces.)

Self-ligating or friction less appliance offers overlapping benefits to both patients and clinicians. Patients enjoy the benefits of improved hygiene, aesthetics and comfort while clinicians benefit from time savings in self-ligation and precision in tooth movement.

Advantages:

Faster (Saves 6-8 months as compared to normal braces)
More Comfortable (Lesser Pressure and no loose ends which may poke into the gums)
Hygienic ( No rubber bands and very easy to clean)
